The Relationship of Fashion and Feminism

Capstone Project

Fashion has been both a tool for liberation and another system of oppression for women throughout history. I want to create a photo collage series in conjunction with a timeline of events within the relationship of feminism and fashion.  I will create 10 digital photo collages for 10 impactful decades, in terms of either fashion or feminism within America (mainly 20th and 21st century).  For each collage, I will use an element of my photography, in combination with images from the chosen decade.  To aesthetically match the decade, I will filter using low contrast, noise, yellow tint, vignetting to convey a nostalgic palette.  For my timeline, I will detail the main events pertaining to feminism, and describe the popular styles for each decade.  My project is an introduction to fashion and feminism, for newly curious people, but also could help bridge the gap between people only interested in one or the other.  Many people interested in fashion may not be familiar with what feminist related events influenced these styles.  In the same way that many people interested in feminism may not be familiar with what effects they had on fashion, and how fashion has propelled feminist ideas.
